SYNIOS SFH 4775S Emitter

OSRAM's expansion of the IR SYNIOS portfolio with 940 nm wavelength enables compact sensing without red glow in the night and with high contrast in the bright sun. Most LEDs for IR illumination shine at 850 nm. While cameras do have a significantly higher sensitivity in 850 nm than for longer wavelengths, it can be annoying or undesirable to see the faint red glow of the LED, especially in very dark environments, such as when the user is sitting in cinemas, night trains, or airplanes.

By using a wavelength of 940 nm, SYNIOS SFH 4775S eliminates the visible red glow while still providing a strong light to a camera or sensor. Up to now, the sensitivity of IR cameras was optimized for an illumination light source at 850 nm. The cameras have been further developed to give greater sensitivity in longer wavelength ranges such as 940 nm, improving the overall performance of the system.

An additional key advantage of 940 nm above 850 nm is that it is naturally depleted in outdoor ambient light. Atmospheric water absorbs 940 nm, and even in bright sunlight, the 940 nm radiation is significantly diminished as compared to other wavelengths. This means that by using a daylight filter on the sensor or camera, a considerable increase in contrast and signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved with 940 nm illumination, despite the lower sensitivity of the camera at 940 nm versus 850 nm. The stray light of the sun does not interfere with 940 nm LED illumination and the overall sensitivity increases.

Possible applications are facial recognition, where the bright and uniform illumination of the user’s face or eyes are particularly important, and eye-tracking systems.

The SFH 4775S offers impressive performance with an output of 1,150 mW at 1 A, 1,750 mW at 1.5 A (maximum rating for DC operation) and 3,100 mW at 3.0 A (maximum rating for burst operation).

The SFH 4775S has the same footprint as the 850 nm and visible (white, yellow, blue, and red) SYNIOS versions. Measuring only 2.0 mm x 2.75 mm x 0.6 mm, the SYNIOS family is therefore ideal for space-critical applications. The SYNIOS family has no optics. Its compact dimensions and flat top mean that customers can install very compact secondary optics almost right on the emitting chip in line with their requirements. Optical simulation files are downloadable from OSRAM’s homepage.

The SYNIOS SFH 4775S is the latest addition to Osram Opto Semiconductors’ existing portfolio for biometrics IRED 2D facial recognition. This IR LED is a perfect complement to OSRAM's visible LED SYNIOS P2720 portfolio which is also available for initial customer projects.
