High-Performance Silicon-Gate CMOS The MC74HC393A is identical in pinout to the LS393. The device inputs are compatible with standard CMOS outputs; with pullup resistors they are compatible with LSTTL outputs. This device consists of two independent 4-bit binary ripple counters with parallel outputs from each counter stage. A divide-by 256 counter can be obtained by cascading the two binary counters. Internal flip-flops are triggered by high-to-low transitions of the clock input. Reset for the counters is asynchronous and active-high. State changes of the Q outputs do not occur simultaneously because of internal ripple delays. Therefore decoded output signals are subject to decoding spikes and should not be used as clocks or as strobes except when gated with the Clock of the HC393A.

CD4518 Dual BCD Up-Counter and CD4520 Dual Binary Up-Counter each consist of two identical, internally synchronous 4-stage counters. The counter stages are D-type flip-flops having interchangeable CLOCK and ENABLE lines for incrementing on either the positive-going or negative-going transition. For single-unit operation the ENABLE input is maintained high and the counter advances on each positive-going transition of the CLOCK. The counters are cleared by high levels on their RESET lines.

The counter can be cascaded in the ripple mode by connecting Q4 to the enable input of the subsequent counter while the CLOCK input of the latter is held low.
