Thermal diodes are based on the principle that electric diodes change voltage linearly according to temperature. When a thermal diode's temperature increases, the forward voltage decreases. Designers can determine the junction temperature of a device by passing a current through the diode and measuring the resulting voltage. Thermal diodes can be embedded on microprocessors to monitor the processor's die temperature. The thermal diodes are placed in the processor core where the highest temperatures occur. Analog Devices ADR44x XFET® Voltage References offer ultra-low noise, high accuracy, and low-temperature drift performance. Developed using Analog Devices  patented temperature drift curvature correction and XFET (eXtra implanted junction FET) technology, voltage change vs. temperature nonlinearity in the ADR44x is greatly minimized. The XFET references provide better noise performance than buried Zener references. The XFET references operate off low-supply voltage headroom (0.5V). This combination  makes the ADR44x Voltage References ideally suited for precision signal conversion applications in high-end data acquisition systems, optical networks, and medical applications. The ADR44x XFET® Voltage References have the ability to source up to 10mA of output current and sink up to −5mA.
